A
handsome Plymouth
jug of baluster form brightly decorated in enamels in a famille verte palette with stylised
oriental flowering plants beneath a leaf and floret border.
Ht: 6.25", 16 cm
c.1768
Although the palette with its green, iron red, blue, aubergine and
yellow is typical of famille verte wares,
the strength of the tones, the sparce placing of the the motifs, the
formal border and the vigour with which the plants are painted are
European in character but owe something to Japanese imari for their vividness. Oriental
inspired designs were being supplanted
by European ones at many factories by this date.
This fine jug shows the slight ashing of the glaze which is found on
much Pylmouth porcelain.
Ref: F. Hurlbutt, Bristol Porcelain,
pl. 16 b for the shape.
