A Meissen miniature or toy cup and saucer decorated with a design in blue enamel of Commedia dell'Arte scenes of Harlequin, Columbine and Pantaloon. Diam: 3.5", 9 cm (saucer) Mark: Meissen crossed swords c.1750 This genre of painting was inspired by Watteau and became very popular after a service of it was presented to the King of Sardinia in 1738. Painting in blue enamels is unusual. |
