A Derby group of the Four Quarters of the Globe, Africa, America, Europe and Asia (Australia had not been discovered), each represented by a child carrying the attributes of that Continent and with a symbolic animal at his feet, all arranged around a central obelisk. c.1788-70 Ht: 10.75", 27 cm Ref: Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures, pl. 102. These are inspired by a set modelled by F. E. Meyer at Meissen. Africa - a boy with an elephant head-dress, holding a lobster and cornucopia Asia - Levantine wearing a toque, holding a perfume flask and feeding a camel America - a boy with a feather head-dress holding an arrow and with a quiver Europe - a girl wearing a crown, holding an orb and sceptre. |
