Two impressive Derby figures of Mars and Minerva, the goddess depicted holding a shield with the Medusa's head and with her right arm raised to hold a spear, Mars dressed as a Roman centurion. c.1760 Marks: patch marks Ht: 13.5 ", 34.3 cm Ref: Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures,, pls. 96 and 98. This is a late example of the tradition of dressing figures of authority in Roman military dress. It was particularly in vogue in the baroque period, which this Mars is heavily influenced by. |
