A
Creamware Plaque of Napoleon, probably Scottish, moulded in relief with
Napoleon in a Hieroglyphic Portrait as the “Destroyer”. Ht: 15 cm c.1814 This is after the German print by Voltz of 1814 published in England by Ackermann, the description of which reads: “The hat of the Destroyer represents a discomforted French Eagle, maimed and crouching after his conflict with the Eagles of the North. His visage is composed of the Carcases of the Victims of his Folly and Ambition...His epaulette is a hand leading the Rhenish Confederation, under the flimsy symbol of a Cobweb. The Spider is an emblem of the vigilance of the Allies who have inflicted on that hand a deadly sting”. Ill: D. Drakard, ECC Transactions, Vol 13, Pt 2, pl. 99d. |
